Why Should I Go On a Nature and Wildlife Adventure to Alaska?

Alaska is one of the last truly wild places on Earth—a vast frontier of towering mountains, ancient glaciers, and pristine wilderness. On an Alaska nature and wildlife adventure, you'll disconnect from the modern world and immerse yourself in untouched landscapes where bears roam freely, bald eagles soar overhead and whales breach offshore. Guided by expert Alaska naturalists, you’ll gain a deep understanding of this extraordinary ecosystem while experiencing authentic adventure travel in one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring destinations.

The Call of the Wild – Alaska’s Epic Landscapes

From rugged coastlines and glacier-carved fjords to tundra plains and old-growth rainforests, Alaska is a land of extremes where wilderness stretches as far as the eye can see.

In Alaska’s national forests alone, 14.7 million acres are designated roadless wilderness, preserving some of the planet’s most pristine terrain. The state is more than twice the size of Texas, yet nearly 65% of Alaskans live in just three cities—Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. The rest inhabit small, roadless towns and Indigenous communities, giving much of Alaska a truly wild and untouched character.

Whether you’re cruising a glacier-carved fjord or trekking beneath Denali, North America’s tallest peak, Alaska’s landscapes offer diverse ecosystems and unforgettable scenery.

Iconic Alaska Landscapes

  • Coastal fjords and temperate rainforest

Unparalleled Wildlife Encounters

Few places on the planet offer such consistent access to wildlife as Alaska. On a guided Alaska wildlife tour, you might observe brown bears fishing for salmon, moose foraging in meadows or whales breaching just offshore. The sheer diversity and abundance of species make Alaska a top destination for wildlife lovers.

Wildlife You Might Encounter
  • Brown bears and black bears

  • Moose, caribou and Dall sheep

  • Humpback whales and orcas

  • Bald eagles, puffins and migratory birds

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Alaska a great wildlife destination?

Alaska is home to diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife, including brown bears, moose, whales and eagles—making it one of the top places in North America for viewing animals in their natural habitats.

Spanning tundra, coastal rainforests, fjords and Arctic plains, Alaska supports a wide range of species. Visitors may see brown bears fishing for salmon, pods of humpback and orca whales along the coast and bald eagles soaring over spruce forests. Inland, valleys and mountains shelter moose, caribou and Dall sheep, while coastal waters host seals, sea otters and puffins. Extensive protected wilderness areas allow wildlife to flourish, offering extraordinary opportunities to observe animals up close.

  • Mammals: Brown bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep

  • Marine life: Humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, seals

  • Birds: Bald eagles, puffins, migratory waterfowl

Are Alaska wildlife tours family-friendly?

Yes—Alaska wildlife tours are family-friendly and offer a great way to introduce kids to nature, adventure and conservation. Many itineraries are designed with families in mind, offering accessible activities and educational experiences tailored for all ages.

From safe wildlife viewing by boat or vehicle to hands-on programs with naturalist guides, families can explore the wonders of Alaska together. Comfortable lodges and slower-paced travel days make it easier for younger travelers to enjoy the experience.

Family-friendly features include:

  • Guided wildlife tours with expert interpretation

  • Safe viewing from boats, vehicles or trails

  • Educational programs and hands-on nature learning

  • Accommodations with flexible meal and activity options

Do I need a guide to explore Alaska’s national parks?

While some Alaska parks like Denali offer limited access by road or shuttle, many national parks are remote and best explored with a guide. A guided tour provides safe access, logistics, expert interpretation and a deeper understanding of the region’s ecosystems.

From fly-in bear viewing in Katmai to backcountry hikes in Wrangell-St. Elias, a professional guide ensures you get the most out of your visit, without having to navigate complex terrain or unpredictable conditions on your own.

Why go with a guide?

  • Access to remote parks by bush plane or boat

  • Safety and wildlife awareness in bear country

  • Naturalist interpretation of geology, flora and fauna

  • Gear, meals and lodging arranged in advance

What’s the difference between a cruise and a land-based tour?

The difference between a cruise and a land-based tour is that cruises focus on Alaska’s coastal regions and marine wildlife, while land-based tours explore inland ecosystems, national parks and overland wildlife viewing.

Cruises often travel along the Inside Passage, offering chances to spot whales, sea otters and puffins from the deck. Land-based tours, on the other hand, often venture into remote wilderness areas for bear viewing, hiking and cultural experiences in the interior.
