Greenland is a place where everything you're looking for in nature comes together. It's a mashup of mountains and sea, fjords, icebergs, glaciers, wildlife. It's a really concentrated experience of what the outdoors has to offer. My favorite moments, traveling by helicopter. That was a first for me. That was amazing. Coming around the corner and seeing base camp unfold before us for the very first time and taking in the fact that this was going to be my home. No WiFi, no cellular, no email, just this vast expanse, this valley behind us, and this bay in front of us. The first iceberg and the thousandth iceberg. Spending the first ten minutes with the group I'd be traveling with and understanding that the people were going to be a huge, huge part of why I was going to enjoy this week. I have been stunned every day to wake up and be reminded that I'm standing in the shadow of the Greenland ice sheet. It just blows my mind. It's just the most otherworldly part of this whole experience. It's unbelievable to see the expanse of it right there over my shoulder. And it's awe inspiring and it's also very ominous because the fact that that ice sheet is changing is something you cannot help but dwell on. As it changes and melts, that will have impacts here, but it will also have impacts very, very far away. It's impossible, I think, to be here and not see some of these issues in a more global and systemic way. I spent some time living in Costa Rica, then as my mom and I were turning twenty five and fifty respectively, twenty five years ago, We decided to take a trip to Costa Rica over the holidays and spend a holiday revisiting the family that had taken me in. So this year, I turned fifty and my mom turns seventy five. So it's the twenty fifth anniversary of the last time we did a big trip like this together, just the two of us. My life is very crowded with people and work and activities. So for my mom and me to have extended time to focus on our relationship with each other is a gift and not something that we have much opportunity for right now. I want us all to come into the later chapters of our lives and feel like we haven't left the important things undone. I know that's important for me, and I think it is for her too. And for both of us, bearing witness to the world seems to be a really high priority, just seeing different places, meeting different people, and increasing the chance that we will leave the world understanding as much of it as possible, or at least having seen it with our own eyes.
